In this guide, Iā€™ll share the top ChatGPT prompts for creating engaging ad copy for Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok ads.

These prompts were selected from over 100 prompts weā€™ve tested at Art Does Ads and are the same ones we use for our clients.

3 tips for using ChatGPT for copywriting

Tip #1. Don’t rely on ChatGPT completely. It’s a tool to support your copywriting, not replace it. Use it to find new angles, refine your ideas, and overcome writerā€™s block, but always add a human touch to the final copy.

Tip #2. Don’t expect perfect answers from the first prompt. Use follow-up prompts to refine the responses. Add your own insights and information to guide ChatGPT towards the copy you need.

Tip #3. Not every ChatGPT session will be a success. Sometimes, it just wonā€™t be able to produce anything good. Know when to cut your losses and switch back to writing the ad copy yourself like itā€™s 2022. (šŸ•Æļøāœ).

My rule of thumb is to spend about 15 minutes prompting, refining, and trying at least 3-5 different prompts. If nothing useful comes out, I move on.

All right, letā€™s get to prompting! 

Prompt 1: High-impact ad headlines

This prompt is ideal for creating Google Ads headlines and descriptions, as well as short copy for Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok ads.

Instructions:

  1. Our testing has shown that itā€™s better to prime ChatGPT with info about the company and the target audience.
  2. Then we want to group writing instructions and specify the features/promos it should focus on specifically.
  3. And, finally, itā€™s worth providing it with your existing marketing or website copy to inspire the tone. 
  4. Weā€™ve also found that unless weā€™re very specific about the tone, itā€™s best to let it create several variants for different tones so you can pick out your favorite ones.

Short copy prompt template

Generate engaging and catchy [platform] [ad copy type] for [product/service name].

The target audience is [target audience details, including age, interests, and any other relevant demographics].

Writing instructions: Create 10 headlines each for different tones. Each headline must be within a [number of characters] character limit, including spaces and avoid using exclamation marks. The ad copy should effectively capture the audience's attention and highlight the product's key features such as [feature 1], [feature 2], [feature 3], [feature 4], and [feature 5], as well as the current promo - [promo details]

Use the following copy to inspire the tone: [inspirational copy]

Writing instructions: Create 10 headlines each for different tones. Each headline must be within a 30-character limit, including spaces and avoid using exclamation marks. The ad copy should effectively capture the audience's attention and highlight the product's key features such as personalized resistance levels, AI features, scientifically proven results, short workout durations, and significant fitness benefits, as well as the current promo - 100 Day Free Trial.

Use the following copy to inspire the tone: "Get fit smarter and faster with CarolBike ā€“ your ultimate AI-powered workout solution."

To generate other ad copy types such as descriptions, long headlines, or headlines for other platforms, simply replace the [platform], [copy type], and [number of characters] values with the ones you need. For example, Facebook, headline, 40 characters.

Prompt 2: Refining your ad copy

ChatGPT is also excellent for refining your ideas or existing ad copy. This method can be used for any ad copy you want to improve.

Instructions:

  1. First, we prime ChatGPT with the necessary data about the company, product/service and our goal.
  2. We then provide it with our ad copy that needs refining.
  3. Finally, weā€™ve found that it helps to ask it to act as a copywriting expert to make sure it parses the ad copy through a creative perspective instead of applying general judgment.

Act as a Google Ads copywriting expert and review my ad copy for persuasiveness, scoring it from best to worst and explaining your scores. After that, please revise my copy and provide your suggestions, while being mindful of the 30-character limit with spaces.

Prompt 3: Persuasive Long-form Ad Copy

Here is a prompt we use for generating longer ad copy, be it for Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. Itā€™s recommended for more complex B2B or B2C products or services or just whenever you want your ad copy to do more explaining, convincing or prequalifying.

Instructions

  1. As always start by specifying the platform and priming ChatGPT with information about your company, product, key features and target audience.
  2. Next, we use a similar approach to our first prompt, asking it to focus on features and promos, BUT we make sure to specify the number of variants for each approach (I tend to do 3, as it gives the most variety without overwhelming ChatGPT), and, importantly, we ask it to follow a proven copywriting model, such as AIDA.

Long-form copy prompt template

Generate engaging and catchy [platform] ad copy for [product/service name].

About the company: [brief description of the product/service, including key features]

The target audience is [target audience details, including age, interests, and any other relevant demographics].

Writing instructions: Create copy for different tones, 3 variants per tone. The ad copy should effectively capture the audience's attention and highlight the product's key features such as [feature 1], [feature 2], [feature 3], [feature 4], and [feature 5], as well as the current promo - [promo details]. Follow the platform-appropriate structure:

- Open up with a hook

- Entice with an ā€œIntrigueā€ line to get people to expand the entire post

You can also adjust the above to have it generate ideas based on copywriting models, such as AIDA (attention-interest-desire-action) like the one in the example, PAS (problem-agitate-solution), BAB (before-after-bridge), or PPPP (promise-picture-proof-push). Simply replace the list after ā€œstructureā€ with the model abbreviation and expansion in brackets.

Prompt 4: Captivating video ad scripts

Last but not least, ChatGPT can help you write your video ad script and even generate images for storyboards.

Instructions

  1. We start with the same information – specify the platform, and talk about the company, product, benefits/features, and target audience.
  2. Next, we group writing instructions, ask it to focus on features and promos, use a copywriting model, for example, PAS or problem-agitate-solution, and then specify the requirements for the ad script, without providing your ad copy for inspiration to limit the number of tasks.

Video ad script prompt template

About the company: [brief description of the product/service, including key features]

The target audience is [target audience details, including age, interests, and any other relevant demographics]

Writing instructions: Create video scripts for different tones, 1 variant per tone. The script should effectively capture the audience's attention and highlight the product's key features such as [feature 1], [feature 2], [feature 3], [feature 4], and [feature 5], as well as the current promo - [promo details]. Follow the platform-appropriate structure and PAS (problem-agitate-solution) copywriting model.

Video script instructions:

- Dialogue/Narration that aligns with the copywriting model

- Scene descriptions matching the dialogue/narration

- Include text overlays if applicable

Here I limit the number of variants to 1, because otherwise, youā€™ll quickly overwhelm ChatGPT, hit the response limit, and, well, simply get a huge wall of text. Instead, I prefer using additional refining prompts to then have it focus on a single approach or tone.
